For many people, the North Rhineland - Westphalia region is synonymous with industrial areas and crowded cities. In actuality, however, the majority of the state is covered with forests and fields.
The southern parts of the Teutoburg Forest are located in the northeast of this region. In the southwest, North Rhine-Westphalia shares a small part of the Eifel, which border Belgium and Rhineland-Palatinate. The southeast part of this region holds the sparsely populated regions of Sauerland and Siegerland.
The capital city is Düsseldorfand and the other major cities are Cologne, Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg, Bielefeld, Bonn, Bochum, Münster and Wuppertal.
