Moscow is the capital of Russia and the country's principal political, economic, financial, educational, and transportational center. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. From the beginning, Moscow was a fortress city. Much of Moscow's exotic architecture reflects the Byzantine and Slavic penchant for intricate carvings, colorful patterns and wondrous visual statements. Though Napoleon burned down much of the city and the Soviets built much of their architectural structures with concrete blocks, Moscow's lasting impressions still remain intact. After the customary visits to the Kremlin and Lenin's Tomb are made, be sure to see the hand painted cupolas, golden domes and the magnificence of the great Russian Orthodox Cathedrals, such as St. Basil's.
