In the 19th Century, Hawaii was known as the Sandwich Islands.
Hawaii is comprised of many islands which extend an impressive distance of 1.500 miles (2.400 km). Of these many islands, eight are considered the main islands, and are located at the southeastern end of the archipelago. These islands are Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. The island of Hawaii is by far the largest of all the islands, and is typically called the "Big Island.” This nickname is synonymous with the desire to differentiate between the island of Hawaii and the state of Hawaii.
The capital and largest city in the state of Hawaii is Honolulu, on the island of Oahu.
