Following the example of the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (KDS) confirms a detailed knowledge of standard German by testing the comprehension of difficult texts, and ease of speaking. The test gives evidence of a general knowledge of the German culture and civilization.
The KDS is recognized by the private and public employers as proof of excellent knowledge of the German language. This exam is not for students who want to enter a higher level education program or university.
With Kleinen Deutschen Sprachdiplom (KDS), you give evidence of achievement which differs from a Master's degree in the standard German language that exceeds the regional frame. You must understand difficult, mainly literary texts, and express yourself with ease, both in oral expression, and in writing. The examinations degree of difficulty corresponds to that of the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), but demonstrates specific knowledge in various domains of German culture.
Successful completion of this exam demonstrates a C2 language level (Advanced / Superior) to the European Council.

Course description

1. Oral examination (approximately 20 minutes)
a) Reading aloud from a prepared text (approximately 5 minutes)
b) Free expression and interview (approximately 15 minutes)
2. Written examination (approximately 5 hours)
a) Explanation of a text concerning the contents and the lexicon (approximately 90 minutes)
b) Expression (approximately 60 minutes)
c) Dictation (approximately 20 minutes)
d) Reading test (approximately 120 minutes)
