This program aims to give the participants a brief introduction to the common historical Roman methodologies of archaeology. As a result, the participants will become familiar with the customs and traditions of Ancient Rome.
The course is divided in eight sessions, each lasting three hours.

Program:

First Session

  • Historical-archaeological outline of Rome: general introduction to archaeology, identification of archaeological sites, methods of excavation.
  • Rome: the origins, the Republic, the Empire.

Second Session

  • Imperial Rome: topography, location and explanation of the principle archaeological sites found in the current urban area.

Third Session

  • Visit to the Foro Romano.

Fourth Session

  • Roman building techniques.
  • Material culture.

Fifth Session

  • Ostia: a magnificent example of Roman construction techniques.

Sixth Session

  • The Necropolis: chronological differences, excavations.

Seventh Session

  • Restoration techniques: the figure of the anthropologist, treatment of skeletons, treatment of
    funeral remains.

Eighth Session

  • Visit to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Romano.
