Shaping the socio-cultural landscape through communication
This new two week programme is designed to equip students with the skills
and know-how to critically challenge and interpret information, data and news in order to arrive at a balanced view on global ‘big issues’.
The course will also teach students how best to communicate creatively their own ideas and opinions to the widest target audience.
This course is perfect for curious, well-informed students who think independently yet enjoy working collaboratively in dynamic teams. Students will harness technical skills in creating video, audio and text output to bring political, cultural and social discussion to the table.
Topics include:
• Analysing news: navigating the 21st century media landscape
• Investigative journalism – collaborating to create a school newspaper
• Learning about film and photography
• Learning about the role the internet plays in society, and how it could shape the future

This programme is for students looking for an inspirational and ambitious course which gives them the perfect introduction to the exciting and productive world of business management and administration. Our experienced and dedicated academic staff deliver this course introducing the essentials of business management. Students must complete our English test before we confirm acceptance.
This course is ideal for committed students looking for a very different kind of summer programme, who want to boost their CVs and university applications by completing this rigorous and challenging programme. Also, for students considering studying business, finance, management, economics or accounting at A level, IB or undergraduate level, the Mini-MBA provides an intensive and comprehensive introduction.
The maximum class size is 12 and there are 22 hours of teaching per week except on the Extended Mini-MBA where the class will also visit businesses or production plants.
Mini-MBA students are integrated in the afternoon programme with students on our other Earlscliffe summer courses and the normal sports, cultural activities and excursion programme is offered, including two special London visits exclusive to our Mini-MBA students to the Bank of England Museum and to the top of The Shard, Europe’s tallest building.
Course outline:
Unit 1: Introduction to Management
This unit forms the core of the course and provides students with the skills, vocabulary, knowledge, confidence and technique to analyse business issues, prepare projects, research company case studies and give presentations.
Unit 2: Accounting
This unit aims to provide an introduction to basic accounting knowledge for the financial statement analysis.
Unit 3: Entrepreneurship
This unit will include the concept of entrepreneurship and finding opportunities.
Unit 4: Organisations
We will look at the tradition of organisational development and how this has affected modern day leadership and management in business organisations.
Unit 5: Marketing
This unit will involve a mixture of lectures, discussions and short case studies for analysis in class to give you an insight into some of the issues and tools in marketing for the 21st century.

Our activities
Students play volleyball, basketball, badminton, billiards and table tennis on-site. Our supervised afternoon and evening activities include karaoke nights; football, softball, a ‘Summer of Talent’ show, swimming, themed disco nights, tennis, mini-golf, dry slope tobogganing, ‘jeux sans frontières’ and quiz nights to name but a few…
These sports and activities are offered from mid-afternoon, after the day’s lessons have finished.
We are fortunate to be close to both Folkestone’s town centre and its shops, the artistic Creative Quarter, the beach and seafront, all of which offer our students moments of discovery and relaxation.
The day trips
An Earlscliffe highlight is our weekly trip to London (Capital Wednesday™) when over the course of the summer we visit the following famous London landmarks: the Tate Modern; Chelsea Football Club; the London Eye; St Paul’s Cathedral; the British Museum and Buckingham Palace. On Capital Wednesdays™ we use the high speed train link from nearby Folkestone central station which has a journey time of 55 minutes. Our Mini-MBA students also visit the Bank of England Museum and The Shard, Europe’s tallest building.
On Sundays we may visit the world-famous cathedral city of Canterbury including a river boat tour; Leeds Castle and Bluewater shopping centre; Hever Castle and Royal Tunbridge Wells; Thorpe Park theme park and the nearby Dover Castle. Our day trips are supervised. On some visits there will be free time given i.e. Folkestone, Ashford, Covent Garden.

The University Preparation course is for those ages 16-17+, who will soon be considering applying to universities either in the UK or their own countries.
This higher level, skills-based course (22 hours per week) is designed to focus on all the independent learning skills required of an ambitious undergraduate and indeed to help some of our students seeking entry to the UK’s best universities. Our Earlscliffe Director, Tim Fish, has over 25 years’ experience in preparing international students for entry into some of the world’s very best universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, UCL, Durham and St Andrew’s.
This two week course includes:
IELTS lessons and exam preparation (optional exam entry )
• Research skills
• Essay writing skills
• Critical thinking
• Note-taking skills
• Completion of an extended essay on an academic topic of the student’s choice
• Choosing appropriate UK universities and courses
• The Oxbridge entry procedure
• Guided tour of the University of Oxford
• Personal Statement guidance and interview technique
• Taking part in our weekly UNESCO debates

OUR ACTIVITIES
Earlscliffe offers a balance of sports, cultural events, arts and crafts, fun games, walks and
competitions, so there is something for everyone on the programme.

Regular daytime and evening beach trips are a popular part of the week’s activities.
